Bog Oak Rattle

This is a hand made shamanic rattle made with thick cow hide which has a lovely light coloration.
While the wood for the handle is from the Bog Oak.
Bog wood is the remnants of the ancient forests of Ireland.
Encased in the peat bogs for thousands of years.
The wood is preserved by the acidity of the bog and over time blackens.
Bog Wood is such a challenging and beautiful material to work with.
The process starts when the land itself gives up the bog wood
when it is exposed due to land drainage or turf cutting.
The bog wood can date from 2000 to 8000 years old, preserved by the properties of the bog.
I collect the bog wood which at this stage very much smells of the Earth, old & rich.
I store the wood then for 1 to 2 years and let it slowly air dry.
It then hardens and is ready to be sculpted.
The bog wood itself suggests what way to proceed, time is spend in the ‘looking’, the form emerges.
Besides its natural beauty, there is a real sense of presence from the bog wood,
as if it’s burial in the earth for thousands of years as imbued it with memory.

Scott's Pine Rattle

This is a hand-made rattle made from Cow hide which is both strong and durable.
While the wooden handle is made from Scott's Pine.
Pine in the Celtic tradition is said to bring hope.
The wood burns with the brightest flame, dispelling the darkness
and bringing hope in the time of the winter Solstice.
This rattle has a lovely sound and fine feel.

Oak Rattle

This is a hand made shamanic rattle made with Cow hide which has a nice coloration.
The wood for the handle is Oak.
Small stones create the sound which has a distinct
and loud note due to the large size of the hollow in which they vibrate.

The mighty Oak is king off the forest and protector of all within its realm.
It’s strength and stability lends surety on the road of growth towards harvest.
Midsummer is celebrated in the time of Oak,
and the purifying bonfires of this time burn hot with the dense wood of the forest king.
The lenght of this rattle is 25cm.
